Sherrybaby wins Crystal Globe at Karlovy Vary festival
Karlovy Vary, West Bohemia, July 8 (CTK) - The U.S. film Sherrybaby from director Laurie Collyer today received the grand prize of the 41st Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and USD 20,000.
It is the story of a former drug addict who tries, upon return from prison, to establish contact with her daughter.
The Best Actress Award went to Maggie Gyllenhall, who played the lead role.
Beauty in Trouble by Czech film director Jan Hrebejk and the Bulgarian film Christmas Tree Upside Down by Ivan Cherkelov and Vassil Zhivkor received the Special Jury Prize from the international jury, headed by director Goran Paskaljevic.
The awarding ceremony took place in the presence of the diplomatic corps and former president Vaclav Havel.
The Best Director Award was conferred upon Norwegian Joachim Trier for the film Reprise.
Actor Andrzej Hudziak was awarded for his performance in the film Several People, Little Time.
Among documents, the chief prize went to Austrian director Andreas Horvath for Views of a Retired Night Porter.
In the category of documentary films over 30 minutes, the prize was conferred upon the Austrian document Life in Loops by Austrian director Timo Novotny and In the Pit by Mexican director Juan Carlos Rulfo.
The film documentary called Other Worlds by Slovak director Marko Skop received a Special jury mention and the Audience Award.
The jury of the section To the East of the West awarded the Bulgarian-German film Monkeys in Winter by director Milena Andonova. It conferred two Special mentions, to the Hungarian film White Palms by Szabolcs Hajdu and Tomorrow Morning by Serbian director Oleg Vonkovic.
U.S. film director and producer Robert Shaye and Czech film director Jan Nemec recieved Crystal Globes for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema.
The 41st Karlovy Vary International Film Festival presented 230 feature and documentary films, including 15 world premieres and 39 European or international premieres, from June 30 to July 8.
There were 135,400 viewers.
