Maggie Gyllenhaal, Laurie Collyer win big with quirky Sherrybaby

KARLOVY VARY,

West Bohemia

The ironies were running strong in Karlovy Vary July 8, with the first outright grand prix win by an American film in the festival's history: Laurie Collyer's Sherrybaby, which scored a Crystal Globe.

The low-budget character study of an ex-con drug dealer trying to restore relations with her daughter, which also won a best actress Globe for Maggie Gyllenhaal, is hardly standard American fare, said a low-key Collyer following the ceremony: "I've often been accused of making European movies with American characters."

While the American film Salt of the Earth, a tale of exploited miners, tied for a best film in 1954, Sherrybaby marks the first unqualified victory for a US film since the festival was founded in 1946. The festival, which was moved to Moscow every second year under the pre-1989 regime, does not count those years in its history ? thus this edition was officially in its 41st, not its 60th.

In another Czech-American twist, New Line Cinema founder Robert Shaye credited a Czech director, Jan Nemec, with providing his company with its first success in 1967 as he accepted a globe for outstanding contribution to world cinema at the closing night of the festival's 41st edition.

Though some bemoaned the lack of major star power this year, with several name actors from Lily Taylor to Jacqueline Bisset canceling, filmmakers and audiences alike praised new aspects of the Czech Republic's main film event, along with its grassroots credibility.

"You don't hear much about 'industry,'" said actress Saffron Burrows, at the festival to promote British film, adding she found the accessibility for ordinary folk refreshing.

Not that Karlovy Vary isn't looking after business in its own way. There might not be any plans to create a market, a standard feature of big festivals like Cannes or the Berlinale, where major buyers shop for new films. But Karlovy Vary's second annual East of the West panel discussion presented buyers and foreign festival reps with the best new work from around the former Soviet bloc.

Marta Lamperova of German distributor MDC Int., which specializes in such films, praised the event, along with another panel presenting the best new documentaries in production from the region.

"This is an important platform where you can see films like this," Lamperova said outside a packed screening room where young directors were presenting work in post-production in the hopes of finding distributors.

Andy Garcia, who opened the fest June 30 as a new director of Lost City, said he felt kinship with local filmmakers' struggles to find their voice, a sentiment Shaye echoed. The latter praised the Czech creative spirit apparent in New Line's earliest properties, adding that it's clearly still around.

Czech director Jan Hrebejk seemed to personify that quality with Beauty in Trouble, his new dime store novel-inspired feature, which had its world premiere at the festival. Many critics had favored it for a Crystal Globe win but the love triangle won a special jury prize instead, along with the Bulgarian feature Christmas Tree Upside Down.

Festival programmer Juletta Zachárová beamed at Christmas Tree's inclusion, one of two Bulgarian films at the nine-day gala, because she said it represents what Karlovy Vary does best: shedding light on emerging work from developing film nations.

Karlovy Vary is certainly in no danger of selling out, said best director winner Joachim Trier, whose offbeat troubled teen film Reprise won points for freshness with many audiences. European film's worst mistake would be to lose its "cultural specificity," he said, adding that the West Bohemian festival clearly embraces diversity.

Karlovy Vary screened 268 films from countries around the globe this year for 11,495 visitors ? attendance that was only slightly down from last year, when Robert Redford and Sharon Stone were on deck.

Even the festival's pre-screening trailer, traditionally made by a Czech director, pushed the boundaries with surrealist imagery courtesy of Prague artist Frantisek Skala, who humorously offered to help explain it in interviews shown on closing night.
