Prague, June 29 (CTK) - Over 450 film professionals from all over the world have signed a petition in support of their Czech colleagues since May 25, Jana Cernik from the Czech Film Centre said today.
"The petition was written in protest against the conditions under which Czech cinematography has existed for several years and which have impeded the development of film industry on domestic and international levels," Cernik told CTK.
The petition has been supported by representatives of film associations, international film festivals, producers, directors and actors from Britain, France, Germany, Russia, the US and other countries.
Among the signatories are Wim Wenders, the president of the European Film Academy, Norwegian actress and director Liv Ullmann, the president of the Federation of European Directors, Finnish film-maker Aki Kaurismaeki, Hungarian director Marta Meszaros, as well as Polish film-makers Agnieszka Holland and Jerzy Stuhr.
"National cinematography has no chance to exist and develop without a coherent and original system of funding ... It seems that the whole existence of Czech cinematography is threatened," Holland writes.
Czech film-makers have protested politicians´ stance on Czech film since late May when deputies did not pass a bill to increase finances in the Fund in Support and Development of Czech Cinematography.
Ullmann pointed out that the production of films and other audiovisual programmes is a remarkable economic and cultural activity. She writes that world film-makers urgently call on Czech politicians to recognise the role of cinematography in the creation of national identity and consequently the cultural and economic importance of support for film production.
A number of the signatories visited the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary, west Bohemia, in the past.
Festival president Jiri Bartoska has initiated a meeting of film-makers with supreme political representatives to be held on Saturday at the 41st Karlovy Vary film festival which will start on Friday evening.
The meeting is to discuss solutions to the situation in Czech cinematography after the bill in its support was rejected.
Apart from film-makers and producers, Civic Democrat (ODS) chairman Mirek Topolanek, Michaela Sojdrova (Christian Democrats, KDU-CSL) nominated for culture minister in the nascent ODS-lead coalition cabinet, and Greens (SZ) chairman Martin Bursik have promised to attend the meeting.
The ODS, which won the recent general election, has signed a coalition agreement with the KDU-CSL and the Greens, however the centre-right camp has only a half of votes in the 200-seat Chamber of Deputies. The other half of seats is held by the left, the Social Democrats (CSSD) and Communists (KSCM).
Before the meeting with politicians within the festival in Karlovy Vary, representatives of film-makers will shortly meet President Vaclav Klaus, who vetoed the bill on cinematography in mid-May. |
