Hotel Waldstein

Belfast

It\'s fair to say the Waldstein is a pretty hotel with it\'s wooden features, courtyard and cellar breakfast room. It\'s even prettier when covered in 6 inches of snow but it soon loses its attraction when you try to walk on those cobblestones Prague town planners are so fond of!

However, for all its genuine attractiveness, I was a little disappointed with the Waldstein which wasn\'t especially cheap. We stayed in an alleged \'Deluxe Suite\'. To me, you shouldn\'t have to share a bathroom if you have a deluxe suite! I was very uncomfortable with the arrangement, especially as the people sharing our bathroom were rather noisy. The room was quaint and nicely decorated but very small and the double beds were pushed together, not usually a problem but it was a bed with a raised wooden part in the middle which was very uncomfortable!

It is impossible to get a decent sleep-in in this hotel due to the amount of wooden staircases which creak and wake you up. Lucky we took our earplugs...

The breakfast (included) was buffet-style and more than adequate and most of the staff were friendly enough by Prague standards (i.e. not very) aside from one reception worker who would barely crack a smile.

All in all it was satisfactory but definitely nothing special. Oh, and take some comfortable shoes.

Ratby, England

Hotel is set in a very peaceful location near to Charles Bridge. We were in annex, adjoined to main building, and had a clean, spacious room with view to castle. Only drawbacks were lots of seperate keys to different doors and not being en-suite. We had our own bathroom and seperate toilet, but they were both outside the bedroom and in a large open space, which was also used by apartment dwellers on the same floor as ourselves. It was a bit of a strange set up, but worked ok. Reception staff very pleasant and helpful, not too many smiles, but that\'s their way. The staff at breakfast were really nice, cheerful and helpful, and the breakfasts were superb. Lots of choice and very atmospheric in the vaulted cellar. Our arrival was actually delayed by a day due to Prague airport being closed because of snow, and the hotel just moved our whole booking forward by a day, without any extra charge. Would love to go back to Prague to see it in the summer (although it is very beautiful with lots of snow), and we would definately use the Waldstein again

We stayed at the Ave Waldstein for 3 nights, this being a Christmas present from our Son & Daughter in law. We arrived quite late on Sunday night and was greeted in \'reception\' ( a tiny office) by a scruffy young man with shirt hanging out who picked up a bunch of keys and asked us to follow him. We went back outside the hotel and through a locked gate into a concrete passage which led onto a small courtyard. surrounding the courtyard were balcony,s leading to apartments- very Soviet era style. Our \'luxery room\' was up some bare concrete steps, along a bare concrete coridor to our room. The style to say the least was original, no heating in the entrance corridor, no heating in the bathroom and a 40 year old tiled nightstore heater in the bedroom that did not work for the first 36 hours. (The Hotel had no portable heaters to help either). This is the first hotel I have stayed in where the toilet is in the middle of the floor! i.e. not fixed back to any wall or framework. Putting the shock of all the above to one side the hotel is very clean, the breakfast room full of atmosphere and a good selection for breakfast. The location is excelent with all the best attractions within walking distance. But 4* - absolutely no way!

Wimborne, United Kingdom

We stayed at the Waldstein for 3 nights (10-13th December). Slightly worried by overbooking warnings in previous reviews, but simply emailed the hotel 4 days before to check they were expecting us and they replied shortly afterwards confirming this.

On arrival shown to our luxury suite on the first floor. The door opened on to a small hallway with a large bathroom and shower immediately in front of us. To our left was a large sitting area and double bed with complimentary teas, coffee and mini bar. The furnishings were antique and the room lovely and warm in the cold December weather.

We guessed that another door leading off this room would be a locked door to an adjoining guest room, but when we tried it, it opened onto yet another double bedroom set down a few steps.

The hotel is set in a really peaceful area in Mala Strana and is 10 mins walk to Charles Bridge. I was really pleased we stayed over on this side of the river rather than in the crowded Old Town area, which was lovely to visit but would not have liked to stay there.

The breakfast room was set down a flght of stairs off the reception area and situated in a stone cellar. Breakfast was superb with cereals, fruit, yoghurts, rolls, breads, a variety of cakes and doughnuts. Hot food consisted of hard-boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, replenished regularly in the hot plate, sausages and some rather garlicky baked beans.

You could literally eat as much as you liked and each day we didnt need to eat again until dinner at 9:00pm.

Mention was made in earlier reviews to surliness of staff, but we found the receptionist to be extremely friendly and helpful. We had booked the Prague Shuttle return service prior to leaving the UK, but she was horrified when she found out how much we had paid. The hotel would lay on a taxi for half the price of the Prague Shuttle.

If we return to Prague (and I would like to sample the city in the summer), we will definitely stay in the Waldstein Hotel.

I would like to say that Prague has to be one of the fascinating cities we have visited and we have travelled extensively.

Weymouth

Lovely little hotel right in the centre. 5min. walk from Karlov most. Very clean, good breakfast, impressive furniture, free internet, but I would give it 3 star. I would recommend this hotel. I also would recommend to visit museum of Medieval torture instruments ( just of the Karlov most, entrance about £2.50) and Sex mashines museum ( of square, entrance about £3-4). If you love beer and good food you must go to Brewery and restaurant Pivovarsky Dum (Jesna/Lipova 15, 120 44 Praha2, tel.[--]. There you can try champagne beer, cherry beer, banana beer and other 5-6 flavours, I know some of the flavours seems strange, but banana and champagne beer very nice. Very good food in that place too, we have been there twice and in very cheap. Don\'t go to Prague by night with dinner cruise. Prague very small, you see nothing when on the bus or boat, food very bad. It waist of time and money, but Karlstejn Castle must. It very good, not too long and nice lunch included. We had great time in Prague, go there and stay in our hotel.
