Hotel Waldstein

Leeds

Stayed at the Waldstein over Christmas last year. Prague is gorgeous and not as crowded at that time of year, although perishingly cold. We found plenty of places to eat thanks to our \'top ten\' guide, and there is a lovely quite shabby bar called Chimera just around the corner from the hotel that makes fantastic mulled wine. Beware the outside toilets though, cross your legs it\'s not worth it!

As for the hotel, the rooms were charming and very warm. We had quite a spacious suite, although there was no bath just a shower (not a problem for us). The staff in reception at first impression seemed surly, but actually proved helpful.

The cellar breakfast room is lovely, and the waitress was very helpful. Don\'t expect bangers and bacon, it\'s a czech hotel not an english one! However there is a good selection of breads, meats and cheeses, and if you ask the waitress, the cook will prepare you fried eggs. I loved the garlic mayonnaise concoction that was available with salad at breakfast, it however did not love me and I shall try and abstain on my next visit.

I am returning this year, despite the fact the Waldstein is quite expensive, we can\'t resist the romance of the old building and the really convenient location (though beware this end of town is not the best for party anaimals). We have stayed at Andel\'s previously and that too is excellent, although completely different!

Newcastle Upon Tyne

We stayed in the Waldstein for four nights in the middle of April 06, our first visit to Prague. Took a minibus from the airport along with two other couples (strangers) who were staying at different hotels. Cost was 480 crowns per couple and we got a nice tour of the city as drop-offs were made. The Waldstein is a small, traditional building in the Mala Strana area-west side of Charles Bridge- which is fairly quiet and upmarket - many embassies in the immediate vicinity including USA, UK, Germany, France Japan and others.Easy 5 minute walk to Charles Bridge and another 10 to Old Town Square. 20 mins walk to Wenceslas Square from hotel. All major attractions within walking distance including Prague Castle which overlooks the Mala Strana. We had no problem finding cafes, bars restaurants in Mala Strana for lunch and evening meals. Hotel room was a twin on the first floor, overlooking the square to the front. Inside the door was a small lobby, off to the right was the bedroom and to the left was the bathroom. Bathroom was fine, with tub, but only hand held shower. Room was clean, with dark furniture. Cupboard with minibar and safe which you could code yourself - v.useful. Free tea/coffee/kettle. Beamed ceiling with boards above, and you could occasionally hear footsteps but did not bother us at all. Breakfast served in the basement - converted cellar - attractive room. Wide choice - cereals, fruit, rolls, croissants, sausages, eggs, ham, cheeses etc. Juices, tea, coffee. Room near reception had free internet use which was useful. Slight drawback was morning noise from renovation of nearby building, but not evening. Booked taxi through hotel to travel back to airport - 540 crowns. 1/2 hr journey. Enjoyed our visit though rather chilly,(5c) would certainly use Waldstein again!

Payts

I stayed here end of March with my husband & 2 friends. Staff were helpful. I stayed in attic apartment which had 2 double bedrooms, very spacious & clean.Bathroom with bath very clean. My friends stayed in a suite with 2 bedrooms. Breakfast was excellent. I would recommend & would stay again. Only 5mins from Charles Bridge. Good restaurants in area

Berkshire, United Kingdom

We stayed at the Waldstein at the beginning of March and the cold weather made it all the more romantic! The courtyard was very pretty under 1.5ft of snow! We booked a double and got upgraded to a deluxe suite that had a seperate bedroom with a massive double bed as well as a living area in the main part of the room. The bathroom was small (just a shower - no bath), but was clean and charming. The staff were helpful if a bit abrupt, but i think this is more an Eastern European cultural thing than rudeness. The breakfast offered lots of choice (some of it bizarre!) and there was plenty on offer for all, fruit, cakes, hot things and cold meats and cheese. Even salad (that\'s the bizarre bit!)! The hotel is in a quiet courtyard close to a busy square, near the Charles Bridge, there was no traffic noise, but it was in a great position to see all that Prague has to offer. I would definately recommend the Walstein.

Scotland

The Waldstein is in a great location very close to Prague Castle, the river and the famous bridge. It is a old hotel and has a lot of atmosphere. Plenty of restaurants and bars nearby as well - ranging from the expensive (comparable to UK)to the very cheap. Possible to eat out very well and have a few beers for under £10.

It\'s located in a quieter part of the city, with a lot of government buildings and embassies. All older buildings so still charming. However, it\'s very close it is to some of the best sights and to the subway.

After reading some other reviews we booked by phone to ensure that we would get a room at the Waldstein and not another hotel. This seemed to work! We ended up with the suite with a double and twin room separated by a small living room. The staff are all very helpful and the breakfast was generally good.

The only minor irritation was that 3 young men who were in prague to get drunk for the duration of their visit were transferred from another hotel. Given that the Waldstein is a charming old hotel best suited for couples or families, this probably wasn\'t a great idea. They were pleasant enough (if drunk!)but after a single night where they argued with the receptionist, broke a window and tried to break down their own room door they were tranferred somewhere else!

Apart from this our stay was very enjoyable and we would definately stay at the Waldstein again.
