Hotel Waldstein

Belfast, United Kingdom

We were at the Waldstein in Novemeber. We really enoyed the hotel and the breakfast and got good service from porter and domestic staff. Our room was gigantic and ther wasn\'t much noise. However we did wonder how other people would fair in rooms close to the stairwells which are noisey. Perhaps we were lucky. We were told the hotel was a three star and paid £156 for both of us for three nights. We are going back to Prague in September 2005 and have been trying to get the Waldstein again. However they have been listed now as four star and they are looking £450 for three nights! I realsise November is low season and September isn\'t but I don\'t think the increase cost would justify staying here again. Having read the recent reports it seams that their standards haave dropped yet they are charging more! I think I will look somewhere else in Mala Strana for September!

Birmingham, UK

We stayed in the deluxe appartment at the Hotel Waldstein (we were there the last week in January). We paid around UK£230 for 4 nights bed and breakfast and felt this was good value for money. The appartment had a kitchenette and 2 bedrooms (1 attached to the kitchenette/dining room) and good sized bathroom. The seperate bedroom that we used had a ceiling which was a little low, but it is an old building so this was just part of the character and no inconvenience. Bath was good and hot, although there was a problem with the toilet refilling. The staff were great and nothing was too much trouble. There was some noise from deliveries, but not much from other guests. Breakfast was good with a wide range of hot and cold food. We had an evening return flight and the hotel stored our bags for us and called a taxi for us when we returned. They have a set price deal with a taxi firm so that you don\'t get ripped off. The hotel is not far from Charles Bridge or the castle and there are plenty of places to eat and drink within a short walk.

This hotel was a big disappointment given its 4 star rating and tariff of Eur 180 / night . Spent two nights in a deluxe appartment where ceiling was so low that you had to bend over to walk around the bed and where there were only two tiny windows looking out on to the square . The water pressure in the bathroom was so poor ( just a dribble ) that it was impossible to have a shower. the bath unfortunately took almost half an hour to fill and then was only luke warm. The biggest problem with this hotel is that there is no sound insulation between rooms and floors- was woken on both nights there by other guests returning home late . Their whole conversation and movements could be clearly heard from not just next door but underneath as well. The breakfasts were poor - no fresh fruit just tinned fruit salad and bread rolls stale - staff only cleared the tables once you had left. The breakfast room was in a windowless basement and was crowded and cramped in fact the whole hotel was just too small for the number of people staying - felt cramped and claustrophobic. Acess to the rooms is via an outside staircase and guests required to lug suitcases up four flights of stairs to the appartment and higher rookms as hotel porter only works limited hours. All in all a big disappointment and a most uncomfortable stay.

Sheffield

We chose this hotel because of the reviews on this site, and were disappointed with our room. Each room is different (apparently), and ours was rather small, long and narrow - it was rather like sleeping in a corridor with the two beds lined up along one side of the room. The other problem was that because it was on the ground floor looking out onto the courtyard, everyone could see in unless we had our curtains closed. We asked to be moved, but the hotel was full. I got the impression that they would have moved us if they could.
Having said all that, the room was clean, warm and comfortable. The hotel is in a good location fairly close to the Charles Bridge and to the Castle.
We thought the breakfast was good. Lots of choice, and there was always a bottle of champagne (well something fizzy) available.
All in all this hotel didn\'t seem very good value, though it seems that Prague hotels generally are pretty pricey, so we may not have done better elsewhere.

Middlesbrough, England

A 4 star hotel and the rooms really do have antique furniture, or at least room #4 has. You do need to appreciate the gothic style of it all, though if you\'re coming to Prague I suppose you will. Our room had a 3 feet high crucifix, dripping blood etc... together with a very old painting above our highly ornate bed of the Virgin Mary & Child. Sounds scarey but it actually works. Service is good & efficient. The well publicised buffet breakfast is a real disappointment for a 4* & not a cheap place, the hot stuff comprised only of scrambald eggs & frankfurturs & the fresh fruit salad was out of a tin. The bread was to die for & the cold ham/cheese were fine. A huge plus is the location, close to the Charles Bridge but in a very quiet cul de sac in an area with good resteraunts.
