Durham, United Kingdom We had actually booked the Waldstein Hotel but, on arrival, were told they could not accommodate us due to \"technical problems\". However, they gave us a free bottle of \'champagne\' and a free taxi ride to the Golden Star instead.
Check-in was quick and simple and we were given a pleasant room on the second floor. The layout of the hotel is quite unusual and there is a turret containing a spiral staircase. The room was clean and comfortable and very warm.
The hotel is situated in the historic district, very near the palace, so it is nice and quiet at night. A 15-20 minute walk takes you into the main centre of Prague where there are plenty of bars and restaurants. One word of advice; ALL the streets are cobbled so don\'t wear your best heels or they will be ruined! We wore our walking boots.
The breakfast was adequate; the usual buffet style. There wasn\'t a huge choice and no hot breakfast was available, but there was a selection of meats, cheeses, fruit, cereal and bread.
I would stay here again and would recommend it.

shropshire UK Just read review \'Positively Corrupt\' about this hotel and had to write.
We had the same experience - arrived on Christmas Eve at 7pm to be told there were no rooms for us and there was no manager on duty. I had emailed confirmation of the booking the week before so stood my ground. The girl on reception kept saying it was \'due to a technical problem\'. I was not impressed - it was Christmas Eve after all and it was totally unacceptable. They tried to palm us off with rooms at the Red Lion but as I had been to Prague twice before, I would not be fobbed off. In the end we were offered a discount and rooms at the new 5 star hotel The Three Storks which I have to say was wonderful. The manager was so sorry for us he gave us free champagne!
Be warned - the Golden Star and presumably the other hotels in the group are managed by invisible incompetents. I made a formal complaint via the Prague owned agency I booked through who looked into it and apologised, but the harm had already been done.

Verona, Italy Ottimo albergo; principale incoveniente la mancanza di una hall. Camere belle, spaziose, confortevoli. Qualche piccolo malfunzionamento nei bagni.

Cork On arrival at the hotel late on a Saturday evening we were told firstly there was no reservation but after a few minutes it was found, no major issue really but it was the start of a long weekend of most unfriendly & unhelpful staff. We put our bags in our room and went to reception to ask where to go for a few drinks, our response was \"I don\'t know\", this is what we experienced for the rest of our stay. The area itself is very quiet and we had no idea which direction to go so we kept asking him to please point us in the right direction, eventually (to get rid of us), he told us to go up the hill - we realised the day after only a 10 minute walk DOWN the hill was where we should have gone, how simple would it have been for him to tell us this??? There was nothing really up the hill but we found a restaurant that was about to close so we bought a bottle of wine and took it back to our room - very upset. Luckily we had a lovely room with a fantastic view over Prague but not exactly the way we wanted to spend our first night on holidays!!!!
The following two mornings we went for breakfast and not one member of staff even acknowledged our presence, no such thing as \"good morning\", breakfast wasn\'t great either. After that I just couldn\'t face the hostility so we went to a lovely cafe down the hill. The receptionist was the exact same, \"I don\'t know\" was her favourite line, I asked here where was Wenceslas Square & she told me she didn\'t know!!!!!!! So I asked her just to mark the New Town area on the map & she marked a totally different place to where we actually found it. It wasn\'t like we even bothered them that much coz luckily it\'s easy to find your way around Prague city. The hotel is very centrally located but it wasn\'t cheap to stay, I could never recommend anyone to stay there. On the day we were leaving we went to the airport 4 hours before our flight time because we just wanted to get away from the place. We go on a city weekend break for our wedding anniversary every year, luckily we\'ve always had a great time but this year we felt like unwelcome guests, it left us with very bad memories, so bad that I\'ve booked a weekend in Barcelona in a few weeks time so Prague won\'t be the memory of our 4th anniversary.
