Hotel Rokoko

Edinburgh, Scotland

Four of us stayed for 4 days at the Rokoko in late July. When I made my booking (with Globespan) a couple of months ago it was described as a 3-star but subsequently I saw it classified elsewhere as a 3-star superior. When we arrived however it had Kafkaesquely metamorphosed into a 4-star - don't think it merits that rating however.
It has been open for just a few months and as a result it's very clean, modern and smart - you can still smell the new carpets. The building itself isn't modern though and there's a nice staircase at the rear which looked rather art nouveau in style. Staff were friendly and helpful. Reception is cramped and is the only real public area in the hotel. Rooms at the front are of a good size and bathrooms are great apart from the lack of a shower curtain - is this a Czech custom? No air conditioning but a fan was provided. Breakfast is the usual international range and perfectly adequate with especially good bread and pastries, though the fresh fruit was a little elderly. The breakfast room is in the basement and doubles up as a saleroom for antiques at what appeared to me to be inflated prices. You can enjoy your cereal while perusing the price tickets on a range of mirrors, chairs and sofas from various eras.
Minibar prices are as extortionate as ever. Get your bottles of water and soft drinks at the small supermarket in the basement of Debenham's opposite. There's a Marks and Spencer right next door for those who like that sort of thing.
The Hotel is situated right in the centre of Wenceslas Square almost exactly opposite the Hotel Europa. As is well known, the area is a little seedy after dark but we never felt threatened or uncomfortable. In fact the location is probably close to ideal for an insomniac people-watcher like me. There's plenty going on in the square 24/7.
The National Museum is at the top of the square, just two minutes walk away. It has fab internal staircases where scenes from Mission Impossible were filmed and where classical concerts are held - one of the highlights of our visit. You sit on cushions up and down the stairs.
Most of the time we ate in the Old Town Square area where there is plenty of choice of restaurants and to be honest this is the area I would probably stay in for a return visit to Prague. That said, the Rokoko is a perfectly good 3-star hotel and a bargain since the price we paid was way below the advertised rack rate. I would recommend it for a short break.

Scotland, UK

I have stayed in many 4 star hotels and this is certainly not one of them. A 3 star rating would be nearer as it reminded me of express type accomodation. Minimal reception area, only one lift, for six floors, and no bar area or lounge within the hotel, as the cafe bar is in the shopping arcade next door. Rooms are of a good size and comfortable, but with temperatures in the high 20`s we really needed air conditioning, the rooms are stifling. No shower curtain and we had to ask for a fan after the first night as our room did not have one. As we had travelled in a group we were able to compare rooms. Sixth floor rooms are air conditioned, most rooms have fans and some have shower screens. All of our rooms had a trouser press, mini bar, and free safe, which was not bolted down. Television had only cnn news channel in English but does have pay per view movies and internet access. No tea making facilities in rooms. Shower gel and soap are provided. Breakfast was reasonable with a decent selection if somewhat limited if you came down near the end. With one lift you may have to wait a while as the breakfast is served in the basement and we could not find a connecting stairway to or from here.
Our party overall were happy with the hotel as we only stayed 2 nights and organised our sightseeing with the hotel reception desk who we found to be very friendly and helpful.
Nightime outside the hotel and Wenceslas Square in general is fine if you are after cheap sex, you don`t mind beggars and people touting for bars and nightclubs. More than one of our group were slapped when politely refusing the services of the younger ladies and they will openly touch you in a sexual manner. The police openly ignore these activities, maybe it`s legal. If you must use the money exchanges be very careful, we witnessed an incident where three tourists were (legally) short changed and the police would, or could not take any action. The heavies appeared from the back shop to keep things in order and the tourists lost out as usual.
The Old town area is much more pleasant if somewhat crowded at times, but we intend to return to Prague as there is so much more we wish to see.
The majority of people we met were very friendly and helpful, don`t be put of by Wenceslas Square, just avoid it at night.

Aberdeen

Just back from a stay at this hotel, which for the price was great VFM...but as with other reviews some anomolies are the lack of aircon (even on the 6th floor !),no shower curtain, only one channel (CNN) in English & no radio ?...(not a problem if you want to listen to the music from the club until around 6.30 a.m !!!!! it was an MTV party apparently !)

Reception was small & at times busy, but staff friendly...only one lift...!

Big (but hot !) rooms, very clean...at the front anyway,a great outlook.

Area quite seedy at night...best to head for Old Town, over Charles Bridge area's.

Did the Insider tour with City Walks...it was fab & great VFM.Try Bellini's,Square,'Three Blue Balls' & East West for good food.

To sum up the hotel, you get what you pay for I suppose...but maybe a bit more in this case ?

Birmingham, England

Have just got back from a 4 day stay in the Rokoko Hotel. Found the Hotel very clean and had everything (almost) we needed, (No shower curtain, very odd!).

The room we had was at the front and was very spacious and warm.

Breakfast was the normal Continental feast and very edible.

Area in the evening may have been slightly seedy but as two women on our own we never felt threatened.

As for only one English channel, CNN, so what. Do you go to another country just to watch TV? If so, how sad.....

We found the hotel very good and the staff did all they could to help.

Would definitely recommend to colleagues and friend as a good, clean and cheap hotel to stay.

Glasgow, Scotland

Just back from a 2 night stay at the Rokoko we had a great time. The hotel room was modern, clean and nicely decorated. Everything was absolutely spotless. The staff were very helpful.

No problems with no shower curtains and there was air-conditioning (not that we needed it in November!). We had a twin room on the 6th floor (rm606) easily of 4* standard. The location of the hotel is great right across the road from the metro (Mustek - 1 stop from the Old Town)and in the heart of a very large shopping area. Ideal if you fancy picking up any bargains.

Definitely would recommend this hotel.
