Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) is the most famous Bohemian spa. It was named for the Bohemian King and German and Holy Roman emperor Charles (Karl) IV who allegedly found the springs in 1358 during a hunting expedition. In the 19th century, royalty came here from all over Europe for treatment. Among the rich and famous who visited Karlsbad are Goethe, Schiller, Beethoven, Chopin, and Karl Marx.

The strongest is the Vridlo spring, rising from the depth of 2,000-3,000 metres. The temperature reaches 73° C. The temperature of the other springs is around 40° C.

Frantiskovy Lazne lies in the most western part of the Czech Republic, near the venerable frontier town of Cheb. The oldest records about the local cold springs and healing peat originate from the 12th century. The famous German poet of 19th century J.W.Goethe was fascinated by the park design, architectural beauty and its healing facilities so much, that he called Frantiskovy Lazne "paradise on the earth".

The origins of the spas was put in place by Josef Jan Nehr - a monastery doctor, who convinced an abbot and several monks to try a spa cure in 1779. He found out that small amount of water drunk several times a day adjusted digestion, stimulated their appetite and brought refreshing sleep both to the abbot and to the monks. Doctor Nehr also did a chemical analysis of the springs and he decided to cure ill people.
However the monastery fought to gain all the necessary permissions to build a spa building until 1786. In 1818 Marienbad received the statute of a spa place.
